With grateful hearts for 90 well-blessed years, the family of Gerald “Gerry” Edward Tozer wish to announce his heavenly homegoing in the early hours of Monday, November 3rd, 2025, at Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, N.B., surrounded by family members, caring Palliative Care staff and the presence of the Lord whom He loved.
Gerry was born in 1935, to the late Hubert and Margaret (Johnston) Tozer in Newcastle, N.B.
Most of his working career was in mine purchasing departments.
He started his career at Heath Steele Mines, N.B., then moved to Dennison Mines in Elliott Lake, Ontario, and then back to various New Brunswick mines. He also enjoyed his working days at Canmar Supply Ltd, Coffin Office Supply Ltd and National Sports.
In spite of a full working career, Gerry always took time to volunteer throughout the city, helping families as president of The Canadian Cancer Society (Bathurst Division), driving for the Canada Winter Games in Bathurst, or leading sing-a-longs and visiting in nursing homes throughout the city.
He spoke often of his role in the reading program and as a weekly kitchen helper in the breakfast program at Parkwood Heights Elementary School. Another volunteer activity that was near and dear to his heart was the annual presentation of Gideon New Testament Bibles, not only to hotels throughout New Brunswick, but to grade 5 school children, from Miscou Island to Campbellton and beyond.
And let's not forget the many aspiring young hockey players in the Bathurst Minor Hockey Program who were fortunate enough to have "Coach Gerry" mentor and coach them to greatness! He also had a great love of reading, with particular interest in Biblical and World History, and was a lifelong card-carrying member of the local library.
Amidst all the work, community and church commitments, Gerry also loved spending time with his family, whether it was shuttling to and from sporting events in the big brown station wagon (complete with 8 track tape gospel singers, much to the chagrin of his children) or zooming through the forest trails around Bathurst on their family skidoo, squealing kids in tow on the toboggan. And while insisting he didn’t "want" to participate in family game night, he was always mysteriously close by, laughing and shouting out the answers to charades or which card to play.
One of the Gerry's greatest joys was attending and serving at the Point Church in Bathurst (formerly Bayview Baptist Church), even into his final years. From choir singing, front-door greeting, serving on boards, helping to park cars, painting rooms, and pretty much every job in-between, he loved his church family, and loved his community. His desire was that all of Bathurst would someday know how much Jesus loved them.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maye Elizabeth (Wilson) Tozer; children, Cynthia Tozer, Karen Stevens (John) & Dean Tozer; seven grandchildren, Jeff Agnew, Laci Williams (Geoff), Benjamin Stevens, Kaylee "Penelope" Stevens, Jarryd Jennings (Stephanie), Owen Tozer & Seth Tozer; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Dylan & Brady Williams, Avery & Peyton Jennings, Sequoia Stevens, and Nolan & Mattias Agnew. He was predeceased by his 7 siblings: James, Donald, Blair, Kenneth, Glenn, Shirley and Margaret Ann.
As a man who was always intentionally grateful to those around him, we carry on his legacy as we send our deep gratitude to doctors, hospital staff, dear friends and all who helped make his final days so full of care and joy.
For those who wish, donations may be made in Gerry's honour to the Parkwood Heights Elementay School Children's Food Support Program (please email the principal at danielf.doucet@nbed.nb.ca or call the school at 506-547-2770 to place these donations) or to The Point Church, Bathurst campus, (please e-transfer to info@thepointchurch.ca and be sure to specify in message area "Memorial for Gerry Tozer".
