It is with broken hearts that we announce the death of Edith “June” Dignam (Scott), R.N., of Miramichi, New Brunswick. June passed away at home surrounded by her loving husband, daughter, son-in-law, and extended family, after a brief illness, at the age of 86.
Born in Millerton, New Brunswick on June 27, 1939, she was the daughter of the late William and Glornie (Gerrish) Scott.
June graduated from Derby Superior School in 1957 and enrolled in the Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1960. She immediately started her Nursing Career at Hotel Dieu Hospital until it closed in 1996. She went to work at the Miramichi Regional Hospital upon it’s opening, where she retired in January 1998. Most of her Nursing Career was spent in the OR and Recovery Room, where she thrived and loved her patients and co-workers.
June was a member of Saint Michael’s Basilica, where she was active within the church, always volunteering with church suppers and activities. She was a past member of the Miramichi Garden Club. She had a passion for flowers and gardening, and up until her last days was often on-line looking at flower groups, pictures, and ‘how to’s” of planting. Her flower and vegetable gardens were gorgeous. She was member of Mount St. Joseph Ladies Auxiliary, and Knights of Columbus Santa Maria, where she enjoyed baking for fashion shows and making sandwiches. She could make a delicious sandwich. She was also a member of the Miramichi Retired Nurses Group, and truly enjoyed their get-togethers and Christmas Dinners.
June loved shopping, especially going to Bangor and Portland on a girl’s trip with her sister Shirly, niece Shannon, and like-a-daughter Cheryl, to hit up the malls and outlets of Maine. She had a love for new jackets and purses and recently discovered Lululemon, and she did some on-line shopping during her stay at the Moncton City Hospital. She also loved traveling to Portland, Maine, where she had family. Stays at the Lake Cottage with her Aunt Edith, cousins Elaine and Ken, and their families were a joy in her life. She had many visits over the years with them.
June also loved her Saturday night Card Parties. Getting together with Byron, Eva, Margaret, Donna, James, Judy, Ray, Angele, and recently Jimmy, was something she looked forward to every week. She loved making snacks with Charlene to feed everybody. When June found it difficult in later years to get the snacks made, Charlene took over and prepared the snacks for the group.
Above all, June was devoted to her family. Caring and selfless mother and wife, her love for her husband and daughter was unmeasurable. She was a healer and caregiver and Nursing was her job and her calling. She had the honour to love her son-in-law, Jimmy for the last 11 years, and enjoyed gardening together where she was the boss, and Jimmy the labourer.
June is survived by her husband, Edward of 62 years; only daughter, Charlene Dignam-Conroy (Jimmy); fur grandbaby, Bo; sister, Shirly Matheson (late Sonny); sisters-in-law, Margaret Whalen, Betty McCaffery, Mary-Jane Dignam, Marily Dignam; and brother-in-law, James Dignam; and Cheryl, Katelin, and Grace, special to her heart, who were with her until her end.
June is predeceased by her parents, William and Glornie Scott; brothers, Melvin and Mac Scott; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; as well as cousins. There were lots of happy greetings in Heaven upon June’s passing.
There will be no public visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Basilica, 10 Howard Street, Miramichi, New Brunswick, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend Father John Fraser officiating. Reception to follow in St. Michael’s Parish Centre. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Miramichi, New Brunswick.
The family would like to thank the Miramichi Extra-Mural Program, Nurses Laura, Marion, and Emily, as well as OT Jeff, who, with their care and help allowed June to stay at home where she wished to stay with her family by her side. Dr. Samad and Dr. Azim, Moncton City Oncology, and 4th Floor Team for their efforts to try and give June more time. Those who brought food, visited and made phone calls. The family would also like to thank the staff of Kindertots Children’s Centre and Conroy Construction for their support and work efforts to allow Charlene and Jimmy to be where they were needed the last six weeks, and a special thank you to Cheryl, who went above and beyond to keep things organized and going. You had a special place in June’s heart.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Moncton City Hospital Oncology Department, St. Michael’s Capital Campaign or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
