It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Paul McCabe of Renous, NB loving husband, father, poppy and dear friend.
Thomas peacefully left us on February 16th 2025 at the age of 86 surrounded by his loved ones at the Miramichi Regional Hospital.
Born on June 29th 1938, Tommy was the eldest son of the late Owen and Helen (Kehoe) McCabe.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley “Honey” (Underhill), son Thomas, daughter Tammy (Wayne), sisters Martha (Garfield) and Mary, sister in-law Wanetta Walls, brother in-law Ed Ryan, grandchildren: Graham (Alisha-Lynn), Caitlin (Justin), Emily (Jacob) , Sarah (Zach), and Lauren; and great grandchild Taryn, as well as several nieces and nephews. Poppy was extremely proud of his grandchildren and treasured every moment he spent with them. He loved their visits and made sure nothing distracted from their time together – especially the TV, which he was quick to turn off when they dropped in.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Florence Ryan, brother Joe McCabe, sister in-law Nancy McCabe, brother in-law Ellery Underhill, and nephew Owen McCabe.
Tommy took pride in his career as a District Forest Ranger in the Blackville Ranger Office. Upon retiring from the Department of Natural Resources, he worked as a scaler at Blackville Lumber.
Tommy was a devoted member of Saint Bridget’s Church. He was proud to be from Renous and took pride in volunteering in many areas of his community. He was a volunteer member of the Saint John Ambulance and the Renous Local Service District. He was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Father Barry Council. He started a chapter of Scouts Canada and served as a Scout Leader for decades. Tommy served as a volunteer firefighter with the RQFD for many years and was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the department in the community.
Tommy also volunteered as treasurer for the Renous Arena from its opening in 1985 for 30 years. He was a volunteer coach with Renous Minor Hockey and later remained active in the rink community by opening T&T Skate Sharpening. Poppy loved spending time outdoors, making backyard skating rinks and gardening. He took pride in keeping the yard tidy in the summer and well decorated at Christmas.
In keeping with his wishes there will be no visitation.
A service will be held at St. Bridget’s Church in Renous on Thursday, February 20th at 11:00 am.
Donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program, or to Saint Bridget’s Church Building Fund Door Restoration Project.
