Floyd Joseph FLAHERTY
1937-2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Floyd Joseph Flaherty, who left us peacefully at the age of 87 after a brief illness. Born in Loggieville, NB, Floyd was the beloved son of the late Francis and Bertha (Martin) Flaherty and later made Kingston, ON his home.
A man larger than life, he had a boisterous personality, a sharp sense of humour, and the rare ability to make anyone laugh. A loyal friend and neighbour, Floyd put others before himself, always willing and ready to lend a helping hand and never one to shy away from a great joke. His generosity touched many lives, and his absence will be deeply felt.
As an avid sports fan, he had an unwavering love for his teams – the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays – cheering them on with enthusiasm in the comfort of his own home or at a live game in Toronto.
Floyd proudly served his country for 28 years as a member of the Canadian Air Force. After his retirement from the military, he continued to work for the Public Service of Canada, for an overall service of 36 years. He remained active in his later years, going for daily walks and bike rides first thing every morning. A skilled handyman, he took great pride in his ability to fix anything, from cars to upholstering furniture. He loved listening to country and western music, from the likes of Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Johnny Cash.
He is predeceased by his wife of nearly 55 years Annie (Doiron) Flaherty. Together they built a life and raised their four children, whom he was a loving and devoted father to. He will be deeply missed by his sons, Steven Flaherty and Michael Flaherty (Genevieve) and daughters, Connie Flaherty and Brenda Flaherty. He was also a proud grandfather to Stacey Smith (Ira), Brandon Loyst (Jess), Jacob, and Elizabeth, and a cherished great-grandfather to Frida and Jason.
He is also predeceased by his brothers, Arthur Flaherty and Gerald Flaherty, and his sisters, Rosella Hallihan, Norma Nowlan, and Josie Boyd.
Floyd lived a life filled with laughter and generosity and his kindness and humor will be forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him. In honor of his memory, the family encourages acts of kindness – help a friend, support a neighbour, or share a laugh, just as Floyd would have done.
A funeral service is to be held later in Miramichi, NB.
