Doris Adeline (Gillespie) Hennessy Harniman

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Harniman, On Thursday April 24, 2025, at the age of 91. She passed away peacefully in her sleep. Doris was born on February 26th, 1934. She was born in the family home in Blackville, to Clara and Ken Gillespie.

She was predeceased by her husbands Robert Hennessy & Gord Harniman. When she moved home to the Miramichi, she had a great friend in Al Walls, who is also deceased. She was also predeceased by her brother Jim Gillespie.

She is survived by her twin sister Stella Grimbleby (Jack), her brother Gerald Gillespie (Sharron), her sister Sigrid Hubbard (David) and several nieces and nephews.

Doris was a devoted and loving mother to William (Bill) Hennessy, of Calgary, AB. She was also a loving stepmother to Debbie Snyder of Newmarket, Ont. She cherished and adored her Granddaughter, Ireland Hennessy and Grandson Liam Hennessy of Calgary. She was a wonderful Grandmother to Jessie and Nicole Snyder of Newmarket Ont. The latest addition to the family was Great Grandson River Fach -Hennessy. Even though she hadn’t yet held Baby River she enjoyed talking about him and looking at the many pictures that she had of him.

Doris had a wonderful career as a teacher. She taught in “One Room Schools” in Boiestown, Upper Blackville and Barnettville, and then in the last part of her career she taught in the main Blackville school. She taught school for 34 years until she retired and went to Toronto to be with Gord.

She had a lasting impact on all people she met, especially her students. To this day, the students that she taught comment and talk about what a wonderful teacher she was, and many of them say she was their favorite teacher of all time.

She always had a beautiful smile filled with love and a beautiful story to tell. Those that know her, know that she had a glint of fun or mischievousness up her sleeve. You never knew what she was going to say or do!

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to her “special caregivers and friends”, Bernie Raymond and Keith Walls. They were her daily source of love and support and companionship in everything she did.

She had a love for knitting and over the years she knit some amazingly beautiful sweaters, shawls, and afghans for those that she loved. In fact, she was still knitting beautiful pieces of work.

Beside all the love and care for people that we talked about above she sometimes had another love! She had a LOVE / HATE relationship with her Toronto Maple Leafs, and Toronto Blue Jays! Just on Wednesday night, the day before her passing she was explaining her displeasure with some of the Ottawa Senators players who were picking on her “Maple Leafs”. She was ready to drive to Toronto to give those boys a talking to.

It is hard to imagine life without our dear Mother, Grandma, sister, Doris, Mrs. Hennessy. Her legend and legacy lives on in the many fond memories we have of her. Rest in Peace precious Angel. Until we meet again, and we will meet again.

The family will receive visitors at St. Andrew’s United Church, Blackville, NB, on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 12 PM until the time of the funeral at 2 PM followed by a reception and celebration of Doris’ life in the church basement until 5 PM. A private interment will take place at a later time.
