Neil “Nipper” Joseph O’Brien of Miramichi, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at the age of 81, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Chatham on July 12, 1943, Neil was the son of the late Claire and Helena (Noonan) O’Brien. He spent much of his working life with NB Liquor, serving customers in both Chatham and Newcastle. He was a man of strong Catholic faith.
Known for his quick wit, strong will, and love of a good debate, Neil’s life was shaped by the people he cared about and his deep love of sports. A devoted New York Yankees fan, he also enjoyed golf and was a skilled and strategic bridge player. Baseball, however, was his true passion. From his youth to his later years, he could often be found on the ballfield. He proudly continued to play in the Old-Timers tournament each year, never missing a chance to get back on the diamond.
Neil also appreciated the simple pleasures in life — a cold Schooner, a meaningful conversation, and time spent at his camp. His summers at the cottage were among his happiest times. The camp was his refuge — a place full of memories, laughter, and peace. It held a very special place in his heart and was where he truly felt at home.
He will be deeply missed by his children: David Gulliver (Ann) of Miramichi, Connie Hannah (Pat) of Miramichi, and Brenda Curtis (Bradley) of Sunny Corner. He was a proud grandfather to: Darcy (Heather) and Dale (Crystal) Gulliver; Pam (Gary) Traer; Chris, Sean (Candace), Evan (Kayla), Ryan (Lindsay), and Shane Curtis; Barbara, Paula, and Roxanne White; and Scott and Amy Gulliver. He was also a great-grandfather to: Andrew and Hailey Gulliver; Ivy and Rose Gulliver; Hannah and Mason Traer; Travis and Andi Hannah; and Victoria White. He also leaves behind his special cousin, Pat O’Brien (Shemara), of Miramichi.
Neil was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary “Mayme” (McFarlane) O’Brien; daughters Hazel, Susan, and Ann; son Kenneth; granddaughter Cindy White; and his parents.
Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Home, 140 King St., Miramichi, on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
